The Lead
For about twenty years, Dutch shoppers have paid online with iDEAL. On Monday, eleven Dutch banks started moving that habit onto Wero, the payment brand of the European Payments Initiative. It is the first market where Wero does not have to win checkout volume from scratch: it inherits more than 1.5 billion payments a year, with a migration deadline at the end of 2027.
The same question runs through this week's other stories: who decides whether a payment goes ahead? In Europe, Verification of Payee now checks the name before a transfer leaves. In the US, the largest banks are drawing a line around AI agents that want to move customer money. And the OCC is inviting community banks to issue their own stablecoins under the GENIUS Act.
