Swiipr Introduces Fully Sustainable Card for Airline Welfare Payments

New product aims to replace single-use vouchers and reduce environmental impact in airline compensation processes

Swiipr has announced the launch of what it describes as the world’s first fully sustainable prepaid Mastercard for airline welfare compensation. The company says the new card will replace single-use paper and plastic methods currently used to provide passengers with food and beverage allowances during flight delays.

The prepaid cards allow airline staff to issue welfare payments instantly, offering a secure and compliant alternative to paper vouchers. Swiipr states that such vouchers are often time-consuming to process, susceptible to fraud, and difficult for both passengers and retailers to handle.

Designed for Environmental Standards

The eco card is made entirely from residual material left over from construction timber and other wood products, sourced from a zero-landfill mill. It is recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable, matching the durability of traditional PVC cards. The product holds ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certifications and meets EN 13432 compostability standards.

Production is handled by Holmen Board and Paper, a paperboard company recognised for its sustainability practices and sourcing wood from forests where more trees are planted than harvested.

First Airline Adoption

A European low-cost airline has become the first carrier to adopt the eco card. The airline is using it to provide passengers affected by travel disruptions with welfare payments, enabling them to purchase food and beverages as they continue their journey.

According to Swiipr, the aim is to streamline the issuing process while offering a more sustainable alternative to paper vouchers.

Industry Collaboration on Sustainability

Holmen Board and Paper representatives have noted that the project reflects broader efforts in the travel sector to reduce reliance on single-use products. The company’s production process includes a mill that operates using 99% fossil-fuel-free energy, and the materials used in the cards can be recycled to begin the cycle again.
